“Bringing the Care Groups Together” Workshop & Evening Presentation

Coast Action / Coastcare has announced the third annual “Bringing the Care Groups Together” workshop. The field trip and lecture is happening on Friday the 2nd of June in Paynesville. “Bringing the Care Groups Together” is an initiative designed to bring together all those community members that are working towards the betterment of their local environment. You will hear from agencies, academics and each other about what is happening in the region as well as build better networks with those community.

This years theme is “Your Estuary – Get to Know It”,

A Project, Works and Grants subcommittee Meeting has been called for Wednesday 3 May at 5:00pm at the DSE Offices, 574 Main St., Bairnsdale to discuss and make plans for;

1. Logo Competition
Continuing publicity
Judging
Exhibition and announcement ceremony at Nyerimilang
Competition finances

2. Professor John Sherwood will speak on ‘Estuary Dynamics’ at TAFE Institute on the evening of June 1.
CA/Cc are sponsoring this event, FOGL have been invited to conduct the event as a chance to speak to a wider audience about FOGL, attract membership. How best to achieve this outcome?

3. Joe Stephens will conduct a weekend day tour of Nyerimilang Park – discuss date, format and publicity.

4. Role and responsibility in acquitting, if Envirofund application is successful, the project of eradicating foxes and pigs from Boole Poole in Spring/Summer 06/07.

… and any other projects that Members may like to get the ball rolling on.

©: Liz Wearne“The Gippsland Lakes are in serious trouble if the lack of water quality monitoring in catchment rivers continues. This has the potential to affect all businesses connected to the `jewel of Gippsland’, including tourism, industry and real estate.”
Retired engineer and advocate for improved water health throughout East Gippsland (and FOGL member), Ross Scott, raised the issue during an address to Bairnsdale Chamber of Commerce and Industry members last week.
“This is a key issue that will involve all business with a connection to the Gippsland Lakes,” Mr. Scott said.
“The Gippsland Lakes are stuffed unless we do something immediately about impacting issues.

Easter Animal Survey Friday 14 April to Monday 17 April

The Field Naturalists Club of Victoria and the Bairnsdale Field Naturalists will be surveying for native animals on Boole Poole at Easter using cage traps. One animal they expect to catch is Pygmy Possum.

Parks Vic have given permission for vehicles on Boole Poole for the purposes of the survey. The Field Nats will have three vehicles and one trailer. Parks Vic have made a vehicle available for FOGL members if they wish to be involved.

The Field Nats will be camping on Boole Poole from Friday 14 April to Monday 17 April. Our knowledgeable Rangers & FOGL members Joe Stephens and Yasmin Aly will be in attendance on Good Friday. This should be a real educational adventure at a beautiful time of year so get in early to be involved.

Clean Up Australia Day @ the Silt Jetties

Mitchell River silt jettiesThe Friends of the Gippsland Lakes, Fishcare, Coastal Board and East Gippsland Shire Council have been invited to attend a Clean Up Australia Day event at the Silt Jetties on Sunday 5 March 2006. Click here for Clean Up Australia’s web page.

In addition to the great environmental outcomes this should be an energising inter-agency day with a recreational fishing (Fishcare) presence (given a lot of the rubbish is from anglers). It should also provide some excellent media coverage. There will be a BBQ and social afterwards.
