PFAS – Forever Chemicals
The pervasive spread of the group of “everywhere” and “forever” chemicals ( Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances commonly known as PFAS ) now commonly found in households, commerce and industry.
The Gippsland Lakes, being at the end of the chain for storm and flood waters can end up with concentrated levels of PFAS. For this reason we believe PFAS levels in the Gippsland Lakes must be consistently and regularly monitored.
FoGL in conjunction with Melbourne University, has conducted some PFAS testing of drinking water from sites around the Lakes. Marine Mammal Foundation also conducts toxicology testing that found very high levels of PFAS in Gippsland Lakes dolphins. We believe other research is happening however there is currently no formalised program for PFAS monitoring as far as we are aware.
Common products PFAS can be found in are bandages, waterproof clothing, firefighting foams, pesticides, cosmetics, tea bags, sunscreen, food packaging and non-stick cookware. and many many others. Sometimes this issue is referred to as “the new asbestos crisis” because of the potential long term issues. Below is a collection of articles and information where you can find out more about PFAS.
