The the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) launches the updated Directory of Important Migratory Shorebird Habitat – a major milestone for shorebird conservation in Australia. Gippsland Lakes is listed with the following citation > “The Gippsland Lakes shorebird area comprises three major interconnected lake systems in eastern Victoria. Lake Wellington, the westernmost, receives inflows from several rivers including the Avon, Macalister, Thomson, and LaTrobe. East of it lies Lake Victoria, a large coastal lagoon fringed by saltmarsh, fed through wetlands connected to Lake Wellington. Further east is Lake King, which is supplied via Lake Wellington and Lake Victoria wetlands and includes extensive coastal lagoons, channels, saltmarsh, and brackish to freshwater marshes. Additionally, the narrower Lake Reeve, located behind the coastal dune system, forms part of the wetland complex. These diverse habitats provide important feeding and roosting areas for migratory shorebirds”.
