FoGL is currently focusing efforts on the pervasive spread of the group of “everywhere” and “forever” chemicals ( Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances commonly known as PFAS ) now commonly found in households, commerce and industry. The Gippsland Lakes, being at the end of the chain for storm and flood waters, and occasionally, partially treated effluent, can end up with concentrated levels of PFAS.

Common products PFAS can be found in are bandages, waterproof clothing, firefighting foams, pesticides, cosmetics, tea bags, sunscreen, food packaging and non-stick cookware. and many many others. Sometimes this issue is referred to as “the new asbestos crisis” because of the potential long term issues.
